Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of Distilled, a product operated by Brown Butter Co. ("Distilled", "we", "us"). By creating an account or using Distilled, you agree to these terms.

1. The service

Distilled analyzes content you submit (pasted text, URLs, YouTube links, or uploaded files) and returns a verdict and, where applicable, a structured breakdown. Analysis output reflects an automated, AI-generated assessment — it is not professional, legal, financial, medical, or other expert advice, and should not be relied on as such.

2. Accounts

You need an account to use Distilled, including the free tier. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity that happens under your account.

Important: Distilled accounts are for individual use only. Sharing, reselling, or redistributing access is strictly prohibited.

3. Credits, tiers, and billing

Distilled is offered on a free tier and paid subscription tiers, each with a credit allotment as described on our pricing page. Running an analysis spends credits regardless of whether you keep or discard the result. Paid subscriptions are billed in advance. Cancelling or downgrading a subscription does not entitle you to a refund for the current billing period — your access simply continues, at the tier you were on, until that period ends, before reverting to the free tier.

Refunds. Because your subscription always runs through the full period you've already paid for regardless of how much you use it, we don't offer refunds for partially used billing periods — this is the same approach most subscription services take. If you believe you were charged in error, or have a genuine dispute, contact support@usedistilled.com and we'll review it individually; approved refunds are processed through Razorpay, our payment provider.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

Use automated means (scripts, bots, scrapers, or similar tools) to access, query, or extract data from Distilled beyond normal, individual, manual use of the product;
Systematically probe, stress-test, or send high-volume automated requests to Distilled or its underlying analysis engine;
Attempt to reverse-engineer, extract, replicate, or otherwise derive the scoring rubric, prompts, or internal methodology behind Distilled's analysis;
Share, resell, or redistribute your account or access to Distilled to anyone else;
Use Distilled to submit unlawful content, or to violate the rights of any third party; or
Circumvent or attempt to circumvent credit limits, tier restrictions, or account limits (e.g. creating multiple accounts to obtain additional free credits).

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate this section.

5. Your content

You retain ownership of content you submit to Distilled. By submitting content, you grant us the limited right to process it (including via third-party AI providers) solely to provide the analysis and related features back to you. You confirm you have the right to submit the content you provide (for example, content you have legitimate access to, such as a paywalled article you have personally paid for).

6. Service availability and changes

We may modify, add, or remove features, or suspend the service temporarily for maintenance, at any time. We'll try to give advance notice of material changes where practical, but can't guarantee it in every case.

7. Email communications

By creating an account, you consent to receive transactional emails related to your account (e.g. password reset). Optional emails, such as the weekly Distills review, can be unsubscribed from at any time without affecting the transactional emails your account still needs.

8. Disclaimers

Distilled is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. Analysis output is generated by an AI model and may be incomplete, inaccurate, or reflect limitations in the source content itself. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Brown Butter Co. and its officers, employees, and affiliates will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of Distilled, even if we've been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim arising from these terms or your use of Distilled will not exceed the amount you paid us, if any, in the 12 months before the claim arose. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

10. Termination

You may stop using Distilled at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, including the acceptable-use provisions above.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date above.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of India. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these terms or Distilled will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
