Frequently asked questions

What does Distilled actually do?▾

You paste a link, a YouTube video, or plain text (or upload a file), and Distilled tells you whether it's worth your time - the internet gives you information, Distilled tells you whether it's worth spending time on.

What do Signal, Echo, and Noise mean?▾

Every analysis gets one of three verdicts. Signal means genuinely new, worth real attention. Echo means true, but not new - a repackaging of something already known. Noise means there's nothing of real substance there.

What's in the full breakdown?▾

13 parts, always in the same order: Verdict, Substance Score, The Claim, What's New, What's Repackaged, The Mechanism, The Constraint, Evidence Quality, Dinner Table Version, One Action, The Question For You, Retention Anchor, and (once you have a saved Library) Connected To.

How do credits work?▾

Every submission's cost is based on its real length (roughly 1 credit per 3,000 words of input), with a 2-credit minimum per submission - most typical articles land right on that minimum, which is roughly 1 typical analysis per 2 credits. You always see the exact word count and credit cost before anything runs - extraction itself is always free, only clicking Analyze spends credits. Unusually long content (a full document, a multi-hour video transcript) uses more, measured against its real length.

Why does a short paste still cost 2 credits?▾

There's a 2-credit minimum on every submission, regardless of length - anything under about 5,000 words lands on that same floor. It protects against very short content being the worst-value case to run. For the best value per credit, paste fuller content when you can.

If I discard an analysis, do I get the credits back?▾

No. The cost happens the moment the analysis runs, not when you decide whether to keep the result - discarding an Echo or Noise verdict still spends the same credits saving it would have.

What happens if I don't have enough credits?▾

The analysis simply doesn't run. You'll see exactly how many credits you need and how many you're short, so you know exactly what to top up or upgrade.

How do I buy more credits if I run low?▾

Pro subscribers can buy extra credits any time, sold in three fixed packs - 10, 50, or 150 credits - rather than a custom amount. When you hit a shortfall, we'll highlight the smallest pack that covers it. Free accounts can't buy top-ups; upgrading to Pro is the only way to add credits on Free.

What's the difference between Free and Pro?▾

Free gets a one-time 10-credit grant and can see every verdict in full, including Noise, but can't save anything. Pro refreshes credits monthly, unlocks saving, full Library/Search/Collections, cross-domain Connected To, and batch export with no Distilled branding.

What happens to my Library if I downgrade, or my guest access expires?▾

Nothing is deleted. Your Library is locked while you're on the Free tier, but everything you saved is still there and reappears the moment you're back on Pro.

Can I get a deleted Distill back?▾

No - once you delete a saved Distill, it's gone for good. A small internal fingerprint is kept so features like Connected To keep working, but the readable breakdown itself can't be restored.

Why did my YouTube video fail to extract a transcript?▾

This usually means the video genuinely has no captions available, or our server hit a temporary block fetching it. If you know captions exist, try again in a few minutes, or paste the transcript text directly using the paste-your-own-text option.

My article didn't extract properly, or looks paywalled - what do I do?▾

Use the "paste the full text instead" option shown alongside the error - as long as you have legitimate access to the article, pasting the text works exactly the same as a normal URL submission.

Is my submitted content used to train AI models?▾

No. Your content is sent to Anthropic's Claude solely to generate your analysis - see our Privacy Policy for the full detail on how your data is used and who we share it with.

How do I cancel or change my plan?▾

From Settings, under Billing. Downgrading or cancelling keeps your current access until the end of the period you've already paid for, then reverts to Free - you're never cut off mid-period.

Can I get a refund?▾

We don't offer refunds for partially used billing periods - your subscription always runs through the full period you've already paid for, so cancelling any time means you're never paying for access you didn't get. If you were charged in error or have a genuine dispute, email support@usedistilled.com and we'll review it individually.
